They're Repeating in America What They Executed within Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.

We went from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to escape secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for others, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer them your pullover also.

The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a form of profound affection focused on the poor is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Among Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the determined opposition to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities of American history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?

America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both humility and belief, a blend that genuine American Christians ought to accept.
